In earlier drafts of the film, Ernesto de la Cruz was intended to be a more obvious villain in a similar vein to Hopper and Chick Hicks. Revered by fans worldwide until his untimely death, the charming and charismatic musician is even more beloved in the Land of the Dead.

Official Description Ernesto de la Cruz is Miguel's idol and the most famous musician in the history of Mexico. Ernesto's memory carried on in the public, thus he has retained his reputation in the Land of the Dead, regularly performing for the dead citizens (particularly, putting on a Sunrise Spectacular at the end of Día de los Muertos) and living out his afterlife in his massive mansion, throwing parties, and with an arsenal of security guards at his disposal. His body was laid to rest in a tomb back in Santa Cecilia, while his spirit was sent to the Land of the Dead. Just as he finished the song on a high note, the backstage hand was distracted and accidentally pulled the lever for the stage's bell Ernesto, being right under the bell at the moment, was crushed by it and killed instantly. In 1942, Ernesto performed the song " Remember Me" at a concert among millions of his fans. Winning crowds with his noble appearance, Ernesto was revered as a symbol of Mexico's passion and pride, all the while leaving no-one the wiser of the true circumstances of his fame.Įrnesto singing " Remember Me" in what would be his final concert. With Héctor's songs, Ernesto became a musical legend across the country and a star of renowned films. Taking the opportunity, Ernesto took Héctor's songbook and guitar and passed them off as his own. Unbeknownst to Héctor, however, Ernesto had poisoned the drink - as the two walked down the street towards the train station, Héctor succumbed to the poison and died. Ernesto seemingly accepted Héctor's decision and shared a toast of tequila with him as he would move "heaven and earth" for his friend. Though Héctor assured Ernesto that the latter can manage on his own, Ernesto desperately tried to convince Héctor to stay, stating he can't succeed without Héctor's songs, to no avail. As the two were on tour across Mexico however, Héctor felt remorse about leaving his wife and daughter behind and intended to quit his career to go back to them. He started his musical career as a guitarist with his childhood friend Héctor as his songwriter. I want to be just like him!” ― Miguel explaining de la Cruz's storyīorn in 1896, Ernesto was an up-and-coming musician from the town of Santa Cecilia. Until 1942.When he was crushed by a giant bell. He could fly! And he wrote the best songs!.He lived the kind of life you dream about. But when he played music, he made people fall in love with him. But however despite that, it is debatable that Ernesto did that to make him look like a good person but since it's not confirmed, that does not explain why Ernesto save Miguel in the first place.“ Ernesto de la Cruz, the greatest musician of all time.He started out a total nobody from Santa Cecilia, like me.He saved Miguel from the pool when Miguel first meet Ernesto de la Cruz, and speaking of that, it's confirmed by the directors that his act of saving Miguel was done out of goodness from his heart. Unlike with most other "twist villains", nothing suggests Ernesto to have been faking his earlier demeanor. His defeat was played for laughs as he gets flinged and got hit on the bell and the bell falls and crushes on him.

His actions indirectly almost turned Miguel starting not to care about his family. He is indirectly responsible for the Rivera Family to hate music, and Hector in the first place (expect Miguel and Coco). He attempted to kill Miguel by throwing him off. After his true nature is revealed, he tells his security guards to take Miguel to a cenote pit.He had no remorse of killing Hector nor did his other crimes. He kills Hector, he stole his songs and his guitar. He apologizes to Hector, by saying “Apologies old friend, but the show must continue with one of us”, showing he might've felt guilty having to kill him.He seem too polite to his fans, and also go around his friends saying that he has a great-grandson, and not to mention, he even plans to send Miguel back to the Land of the Living way before Hector arrived but given Ernesto's true nature is revealed as well Hector being Miguel's great-great grandfather, it's possible Ernesto just to brag about his great-great-grandson for show as well only planning to send Miguel to the Land of the Living so that Miguel wouldn't suspect that he killed Hector, and it also likely that was a facade, and he only being nice to his fans because they did not know that he killed Hector.
